Self-Breast Examinations
The American Cancer Society recommends women,
beginning at age 20, perform self breast examinations on a monthly basis.
Check with your healthcare provider about proper self-breast examination
methods.
Self-breast exams can be performed while in the
shower, lying down, or before a mirror. Proper technique procedures should
include:
 |
Using flat fingers of the opposite hand (use
right hand to examine left breast) to feel every part of the breast,
checking for lumps or unusual thickening. Use a circular motion to
cover every part of the breast. |
 |
Visually examine your breasts, checking for
pucker, dimpling, or changes in the skin's texture. |
 |
Inspect the underarm area. |
If a lump or any abnormality is found, inform
your healthcare provider right away. Self examinations are not a
substitute for examinations performed by a qualified physician.
